An AI document assistant helps you understand and use information from documents. Ghost's My Data capability discovers configured local sources, finds candidate files by name or path, and reads a selected supported file. The extracted content can inform an answer, a working note or the next task. It is not an automatic semantic index of your entire Mac.
Choose the sources that belong in the work.
My Data starts with the files and folders configured in the Ghost desktop app. Instead of asking Ghost to scan your whole computer, give it the relevant source and the question you want that material to answer.
Ghost can discover the configured sources, browse their entries and choose a likely document using its name, path, recency and your intent. Project material should remain separate from unrelated files unless you intentionally connect it.
Use local documentation alongside a focused research question. Your own plan and a public source are different kinds of evidence; the answer should make clear which supports each finding.

Find the document, then ask what matters.
Knowing a file exists is different from understanding what it says. My Data first searches filenames or paths, then reads the chosen file's supported content. It does not search every sentence across every document by meaning.
Ask for a summary, a specific detail, a comparison or the open questions that deserve attention. A useful answer should distinguish the content of the source from Ghost's interpretation, and acknowledge material it could not read.
Keep a longer synthesis in a source-linked note so the useful context does not disappear when you move on. A reference to a file is not a guarantee that the file will stay unchanged.

Use the supported content. Notice what is missing.
My Data can read plain text and extract content from supported PDFs, Word-style documents and spreadsheets. That makes existing plans, reports and tables useful starting points without pretending that every format behaves the same way.
Extraction is bounded. Long PDFs and documents can be partial, and spreadsheet reads can be a sample rather than the complete workbook. Scanned pages without a text layer, unsupported formats, complex tables and extraction errors may need a different workflow.
For deeper parsing, transformations or calculations, Ghost can use a sandbox workspace once the required content or file is available. Review coverage before treating a summary or calculation as complete.

A local file is useful when it changes what you do next. A rollout plan can supply the context for a meeting; a comparison can become a review note; an unresolved requirement can become a task with a clear source.
Use the brief to prepare for a meeting, or turn the next check into a to-do. Ask Ghost to carry the relevant source information with that handoff rather than copying unrelated material.
My Data is a reading and context path. Local terminal operations belong to the Computer capability, and deeper artifact work belongs to the appropriate execution workspace. Access to a document does not itself authorize editing, uploading or sharing the original.

My Data reads supported content through the desktop app and returns the extracted text to Ghost's backend for the task. Configuring a source permits this reading workflow; it does not mean a new Accept/Reject prompt appears for every read.
If a task needs the full local file transferred into Ghost storage, that is a separate operation. Ghost requests an explicit desktop approval for the host-file upload, showing the source, stored name and size before the bytes are uploaded.
Choose sources deliberately and only bring in material you want used for the task. This page does not promise offline AI, on-device-only reasoning, no data transmission or a production privacy certification.

Questions about My Data.
Can I ask Ghost questions about a local document?
Yes, when the file is available through a configured My Data source and Ghost can extract its content. Ask a focused question, then review the answer and any extraction limits against the original.
Does My Data search inside every file automatically?
No. The current discovery tools search filenames and paths in configured sources. Reading a chosen file is a separate step. My Data is not a full-text or semantic index of every document on your Mac.
Which document formats can Ghost read?
Supported paths include plain text, PDFs, Word-style documents and spreadsheets. Parser support and extraction limits vary. This is not a guarantee for every file format, scanned PDF, complex layout or complete workbook.
Does my document stay entirely on my Mac?
Not necessarily. The My Data read flow returns extracted content to Ghost's backend. A separate full-file upload to storage requires explicit desktop approval, but that approval is not the boundary for ordinary extracted-text reading. This feature does not promise all-local processing.
Does the desktop app need to be running?
Yes. My Data requests are handled by the Ghost desktop app, which provides access to its configured local sources and extracts supported content. A disconnected app or unavailable file can prevent the read.
Will every answer have an exact page citation?
Source information can accompany the answer or a saved note, but the current local read path does not guarantee a precise page-level citation for every claim. Ask Ghost to identify its source and verify important details in the original.
Can My Data edit or reorganize all my files?
That is not this feature's scope. My Data discovers and reads selected sources. Editing, terminal operations, file transformation, uploading and sharing use distinct workflows and must follow the task you authorized.
